Hi Dan,
I must defer medical decisions to your doctors. However, as you continue to look into what might be causing the pain, I suggest you follow my suggestions in this post, regularly. An acupuncturist or a naturopath may also provide relief. If a sluggish gall bladder is suspected I would seek treatment from an acupuncturist or naturopath before having it removed. Natural treatments can really turn a poorly functioning gall bladder around.

I'm a 52 yr old male. My pain started out vaguely few inches above my right hip bone below my right ribcage 20 months ago. Its presence is usually felt when I sleep on my right side or deep pressure is applied to the ribcage itself. Repitition of the same motion such as stretching the right side or turning my torso to the right doesn't always reproduce the pain. Sometimes it's felt up under the ribcage or through to my back in the area where the kidney is located. Also, on rare occasions my urine appears cloudy. Recent abdominal CT scan, MRI of my spine was fine. US from a year ago showed mild fatty liver. Liver enzymes became normal. Recent US showed no fatty liver. Bowel problems like Crohn’s disease was ruled when I did my colonoscopy a few months back. The only thing they found was a slight sag in the colon which the doctor said is common at my age and a small benign polyp which he removed during the procedure.

The HIDA scan which was also done several months ago suggested lazy gallbladder and possible hepatocellular disease which my gastro and 2 surgeons I saw when I went to get their recommendation on removing my gallbladder said are often not reliable. My question to you at this time is, is it possible for the pain from a tumor or a problem where the gallbladder meets the liver to felt where the right kidney is located? Also, what should I do next?

Hi Angela,
My guess is that you have a chronic spasm in the muscle there, due to what is called a trigger point. A massage therapist or acupuncturist should be able to resolve it. I doubt if you could do it on your own.

Hi,

I'm a 23 year old girl and I have pain in my lower ribs whenever they are touched but the pain goes as quick as it comes. They have been this way for maybes about 10 years. I have been doing pilates every friday for the past year and for about half a week after there is excruciating pain whenever I move, and if they are caught slightly, for example, in a hug, it takes my breath away.
Do you have any ideas what could be causing this and how to help? I enjoy exercise and would prefer not to give it up.
thank you, angela.
